Dance Floor Etiquette

Dance floor etiquette is a way to fully utilise the dance floor so that EVERYONE has fun.

It is just being friendly, polite, and respectful to other dancers and using a little common courtesy.

Dance Floor Etiquette serves to increase the available dance space on the floor.

DANCERS MUST MOVE AROUND IN A COUNTER-CLOCKWISE DIRECTION FOLLOWING THE “LINE OF DANCE”. Don’t use the dance floor as a pathway to the bar or kitchen.

THE DANCE FLOOR IS DIVIDED INTO LANES

THE OUTSIDE LANE is described as the FAST lane, where you can see Two Step, Triple Two, Quickstep, International/American Tango, or any FASTER travelling dance.

THE INNER LANE for slower dances. The closer you go to the centre, the slower you go.

THE CENTRE OF THE FLOOR is for line dances, swing dances, Argentine Tango and any stationary dances that have no or minimum travel.

DANCE THROUGH THE CORNERS! If we use the corners, once again, we virtually increase the size of the dance floor by reclaiming the parts we’ve never used before.

ALWAYS BE COURTEOUS TO OTHER DANCERS ON THE FLOOR.

If you are partner dancing, always try to shield the lady from bumps and bangs on the floor.

She probably can’t see what’s coming, while you can! If there is a collision, always apologise even if it isn’t your fault.

ABOUT THE MINUS ONE CLUB OF CALGARY

Established in 1963, we are Calgary’s longest-running singles social club! We are an incorporated Non-Profit Organization (NPO). We offer bi-weekly social dances for singles and couples with a live band and a 3,648 sq. ft. wood dance floor. We are excited to welcome all members and guests (familiar and new) to our dances in 2025.

The Executive is comprised of elected volunteers who manage the club and are required to attend all dances to perform various functions. Three or four positions will require computer skills and may need to work on accounting software, website maintenance, and other online business and advertising duties.

Volunteers who can offer 15 minutes of their time at a dance are greatly appreciated. This could be setting up the hall at 5:30pm, helping serve snacks or closing at 10:30 p.m.

The table and chairs need to be set up and taken down at each dance.

Members who wish to suggest or organize other activities should speak to an Executive Member or contact us
